History & Heritage
Built by the Romans two thousand years ago, Hadrian's Wall is 73 miles long and is the largest Ancient Monument in northern
Europe. Set in the centre of the North Pennines,
and only a few miles from the cottages, Killhope is a museum that brings lead mining to life - tour the mine, visit the exhibitions, walk in the woodland
and see the wildlife. There is also a cafe and giftshop. Beamish is a world famous 'living museum' that tells the story of the people of North East England
during the Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian periods - you can literally step into the past as you explore this charming
town. About one hour's drive from the cottages.
Beautiful Hexham, Durham and Penrith are all within easy travelling distance. Each have their own special attractions
from a Bird of Prey Centre to historic Abbeys and Castles.
Food
The Allenheads Inn, a handy local village pub, and the
Hemmel Café, are situated in the centre of Allenheads, approximately half a mile from the cottages. Both provide food
(and drink!) at reasonable prices. There are a range of other great eating places within easy
travelling distance of the cottages - our favourites are the Allendale Bakery for coffee, cakes and lunches, and the Carts Bog Inn for an evening meal out.
Fishing Salmon, Trout & Course Fishing
are all available a short car ride away from Woodmans Cottage. The most popular Trout Fishing is at Langley Dam, within 15 minutes drive.
Horse Riding There is a Pony Trekking Centre at Sinderhope just a couple of miles from the cottages. They cater for all abilities.
Bird Watching Allenheads is a real bird lovers paradise. Curlews, Lapwings, Meadow Pippits, Wagtails, Dippers, Finches, Thrushes,
Herons, Game Birds, and Woodpeckers have all been seen from the garden!
Star Gazing One of the last few areas where you get a real dark sky at night – we've even seen the Northern Lights
on occassion!
Skiing!
Allenheads has the only permanent ski slope in England. We don't get as much snow these
days but when we do the small Ski-Allenheads ski slope is very popular.
