Activities in the Area

There are a very wide range of activities to keep everyone happy from taking it easy to active outdoor pursuits. Here are just a few examples:-

Walking

Walks – we are a walkers paradise – everything from the gentle amble to the pub to a range of more challenging hikes – local map and leaflets provided.

Local Gardens

There is an excellent Local Garden at Langley with its own delightful Cafe and lovely walks. Details at http://www.thegardenstation.co.uk.

Alnwick Gardens http://www.alnwickgarden.com/, a renowned garden is approximately 80 minutes drive from Woodmans.

Wallington Hall http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-wallington/ and Cragside http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-cragsidehousegardenandestate/ are both around an hours drive. These are both National Trust properties with full visitor facilities.

Cycling

We are on the coast to coast cycle route and we have ideal conditions for road and mountain bikers alike, with secure storage for your bikes

Golf

There is a nine hole golf course just 5 miles away at Allendale see http://www.allendale-golf.co.uk/ for details. There is also an excellent course at Hexham http://www.hexhamgolf.co.uk/home.htm approx 20 miles away.

History & Heritage

Hadrians wall (http://www.hadrians-wall.org/ ), the lead mining museum (http://www.killhope.org.uk/Pages/KillhopeHomePage.aspx ), beautiful Hexham, Durham and Penrith are all within easy travelling distance. Each have their own special attractions from a Bird of Prey Centre to Historic Abbeys and Castles.

Food

There is a handy local village pub and a café within approx ½ mile of the cottage, both of which provide very good food (and drink) at reasonable prices.

There are a range of other great eating places within easy travelling distance of the cottage.

Fishing

Salmon, Trout & Course Fishing are all available a short car ride away from Woodmans Cottage. The most popular Trout Fishing is at Langley Dam http://www.enjoy-fly-fishing.co.uk/langley-dam/, within 15 minutes drive.

Horse Riding

There is a Pony Trekking Centre at Sinderhope just a couple of miles from the Cottage. They cater for all abilities, more information at http://www.sinderhopeponytrekking.co.uk/

Bird Watching

Curlews, Lapwings, Meadow Pippits, Wagtails, Dippers, Finches, Thrushes, Herons, Game Birds, Woodpeckers, etc etc a real bird lovers paradise, these have all been seen from the garden!

Star Gazing

One of the last few areas where you get a real dark sky at night – we even rarely get the Northern Lights!

Skiing!

Allenheads has the only permanent ski slope in England. We don't get as much snow these days but when we do the small ski slope is very popular. For details see http://www.ski-allenheads.co.uk/
